@mattblaze

For those who honestly want to engage in #conversation and not be #blocked, and I hope there are a lot of you who do and who are reading this, look around at the #civildiscourse of conversations that are ongoing and model #inquisitive non-accusatory language.

You will still get blocked sometimes but not as much.

We are all stressed and all make poor language choices sometimes. If you look back in my timeline you'll see places where I did. I'm trying to be better.

Please try too.

“can a president unilaterally substitute their own funding decisions for those of Congress? The answer is, they can’t. The attempt to do so is called impoundment, and it’s prohibited by the 1974 Impoundment Control Act. The Act bars presidents from withholding funds from congressionally mandated programs..
The Impoundment Control Act, like much…legislation requiring presidents to follow the law, was passed in reaction to the Nixon presidency.”

feels like it's time to remind my university administration that 'civil discourse' —which it is seeking to define, with the aim of clamping down on radical* speech on campus — does not include academic questions of the form
"this X group of people shouldn't exist".

for example X = trans, X = Palestinian, ...

* radical in the original sense of the word, meaning to get to _the root of_ a problem

How is commenting on or posting about someone’s appearance any better than schoolyard name calling? If we disagree on something important or fundamental, we can use words to explain that, without resorting to put-downs or even just observations about things people can’t control or change (like facial features or body shape) or maybe have chosen (like hairstyle), as is their own right to do as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. #civility #StickToTheIssues #CivilDiscourse #MoreAlikeThanDifferent

“I don’t expect normal times ahead. I believe Trump when he tells us who he is. I believe MAGA when they tell us who they are. This wasn’t just a campaign where the winner takes office and we all move on happily together, shoring up our disappointment. We have to be prepared for that reality, and not get sucked into a “business as usual” version of what Trump’s time in office will look like.”

14/15 Ever notice how, for some people, nothing is ever racism, oh no...but calling out racism - well, THAT'S "racist"?

Instead of the "flight" of avoidance, it's the "fight" of turning it back and inside out until the word becomes almost meaningless and constructive dialog has no chance. And thus #WhiteSupremacy perpetuates.

More people need to get past this. Seriously.

We need to talk about it. #WhiteSupremacy is killing #CivilDiscourse. It's killing #democracy. It's killing all of us.
