Recently Hill Wood Pasture has been identified as an important historic farmed habitat. In the Cheviots there would have been Juniper on the higher ground, then Ash/Birch lower down and finally Alder in the valley floor. Here's one of the few surviving Northumbrian examples, some Juniper on the hill and Alder in the valley floor. Cattle would've grazed the pasture around these trees, protected from the worst of the weather.

23km walk today from Hethpool up the border rigg to The Curr, then back along lovely College Valley.
I passed the site of three plane crashes from World War 2 - there's 19 in total in this part of the hills.
Wideopen Hill, #Cheviots today. A bit wet at time but a good day out. Very good descent on the bike. Because of the #StCuthbertsWay we met other people, unusual in the Scottish bit of the range.

Pretty much everything in that view is artificial - i.e. the result of human activity. It's as manicured as a golf course, in it's own way.
