Met up with a good old friend who was in the area for some twitching; I wasn't able to join him to see the American Pipit but we did head down to Goswick to see a very, very, very, very, very, very distant Black Scoter. Visible only through someone's very expensive telescope. "Oh yes" i said enthusiastically at black dot with a bright orange bit bobbing on the sea.

According to BirdGuides: "Bill scarring on the Northumberland Black Scoter indicated that it is the returning adult drake first seen in 2011" so obviously it has been a bit closer in shore at some point.. birdguides.com/articles/review
