I've posted photos before of these great ceramic public artworks at the UC Davis Arboretum, but today had better lighting so I took new photos.

This is a semi-circular wall of plants and insects.

Despite UC Davis being a public university, blind folks aren't really welcome - there's next-to-no Braille anywhere at the Arboretum. This is one of the few tactile works, but it's incised in Roman letters.

Detail of curved wall with one or two foot square bas-relief tile panels of various plants. Below each are flatter, less decorative rectangular tiles with the scientific binomial names. At the intersections of those, there are bas-relief tiles in the shapes of various insects (some larvae, some adults) that are usually related in some way to the plant species they're near. Nearest to us is Acanthus mollis, which features deeply lobed deep green leaves and a bit higher up and further away are the orange flowers of the California poppy.

@hisstogramma That was very visible today due to the leaves being shed. It was a different view of them.

View south towards low-slung sun in the winter sky, as viewed through tall bare oak trees. At their base are two semi-circular benches with bas-relief tiles reflecting in the pale sun.

About
