Dark lipped Cepaea nemoralis (on left) and pale-lipped Cepaea hortensis, yeah? No - both are C. nemoralis! See reply to see how they looked a couple of days later.
Lip colour and size is the conventional way to identify the two species, but it does not always work, especially in some regions (Cornwall, UK; Pyrenees, Spain), and depending upon age. There are also a lot of snails labelled "C. hortensis" on #iNaturalist that are more likely C. nemoralis. #snails #snail #cepaea
These are the same snails on day 4 and day 8. The lip of the yellow snail has become pigmented some days after the lip has formed. Unfortunately, this late pigmenting leads to misidentified individuals. In real life, the lip is probably still soft when just formed, so you could recognise it as just-adult but this is difficult to tell from a photo, hence lots of confusion on #iNaturalist.
@snailman interesting, we introduced only brown-lipped to our garden from a few streets away, and I saw this individual the other day and was reluctant to id as white-lipped
@snailman Hi! What kind of species are those snails??
@moramacbeath Cepaea nemoralis, aka grove snail
@snailman what are you working on?? I would love to know!!
@snailman I’ve seen the names of the species, sorry to bother you!!
@snailman im reading about cepaea nemoralis and its predator Turdus philomelos and the difference between both species are C.nemoralis and C. hortensis is the white lip color on C.nemoralis and depending on the location it’s common to see the darkest color in cold regions to keep warmer and white or pink in tropical or hotter places. Both are good for humans and I didn’t imagine that I barely know a few species of food one of those species is Pomacea patula catemacensis it’s an endemic species from a Catemaco Lake and in Cultivation of Pomacea patula catemacensis aka “tegogolo” as a fish production strategy for aquaculture producers in Catemaco, Veracruz did you heard something about this snail very usual food in the Monkey’s islands where some people said that there are people with some kind of wisdom and mystical powers you know what I mean in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz region
@snailman There are no studies on the size of their populations, although it is known that in the last decade the production has been declining, it is considered that a little more than 60%, due to extractive fishing. Therefore, production designs based on captive management of tegogolo should be considered as a strategy to balance their populations. To date, there are few techniques to achieve the domestication of P. patula catemacensis through the design of production systems, preventing the constant low population density and the danger of extinction (INEGI 2010). The results obtained allowed us to identify that according to the uses and customs, in the Catemaco region, P. patula catemacensis is being captured without strict control in this regard, so it is necessary to develop and study biotechniques, and present strategies for mollusk production, to recover populations in the body of water. It was concluded that the species P. patula catemacensis can be cultivated in enclosures that allow its control, with the support of producers through training programs for the design and establishment of crops and thus achieve sustainable use.
