Didn't make it to the field, but that's a reason I have two almond trees in my trailer garden. Got a great photo of the initial cluster of leaves lengthening into a stem and more leaves.

Photo through a hand lens of the initial cluster of leaves (which are big enough that most of them are out of frame). The lengthening stem is deep red because the chloroplasts haven't started making enough chlorophyll yet. But the new leaves and stipules are green because some is being made there. And there's an orange-ish red leaf that's still adhered to itself, staying protected until it's developed enough to risk unfurling.
