Fellow #herbarium curators and users: do appreciate getting loans returned with a fragment packet tucked in if material needed to be removed? Or is that more trouble that it's worth? Myself, I'd rather have the fragment packet.
@andrewlhipp
We at HBRA always try to preserve material like flower parts etc. that have been removed and dissected during identification. With Cyperaceae, this will be usually the minuscule fruits and there might be still many left on the sheet, so it might seem unnecessary. But I think even in these cases it is nice to document that actually somebody tried to investigate the specimen carefully.
@umehlig thanks! I feel the same.
@andrewlhipp One needs to keep in mind that the material should survive for centuries to come. Loss should be minimised as much as possible. So fragment packs are very welcome.
We ask not to glue them. I had one return where the capsule was made of non-archival paper with a huge university logo from the borrower and glued in a suboptimal place. I wasn't very pleased to say the least.
