Today, we interviewed Darren Crayn, director of the Tropical Australian Herbarium in Cairns, about the value of herbaria and what universities can do to educate more taxonomists.
The full interview will be published soon on Ecolclips: https://www.youtube.com/@ConnySattler
2/3 Main message 1: Dr. Darren Caryn explains the work and outstanding contributions of herbaria. They deliver the foundation of (nearly) all botanical research. Technologies such as AI, molecular genetics and high-resolution digital imaging will transform the work of herbaria and will provide exciting new research directions.

3/3 Main message 2: Dr. Darren Crayn points out that universities need to collaborate more to train more taxonomists (at least in Australia) as well as invest more in botanical (and also zoological) research. We need to create more incentives for young researchers in engaging in taxonomy. I would be curious to also hear the take of other botanists/taxonomists how we could overcome the taxonomy crisis.
