Catching an afternoon nature break while I wait for my timeslot at the local food pantry to roll around. In just the week or so since last I was down here at my favorite accessible riverside hang, the foliage has exploded into gloriously full spring coverage. Almost makes me not mind the effects of all the accompanying airborne tree-sex on my eyeballs. 🤣

I had to share this... I'm working with an enviromental nonprofit to tell the story of Bangelore's polluted and degrated water systems.

Algal blooms cover the water when it is still. In motion, the water froths due to all the chemicals. We're going to bring drone video in to show how bad it is.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket but I do really appreciate I have the chance to work through @terraso to tell this story.

I'm at St. Croix State Park for this week's video! The park is the largest in the MN system and has over 127 miles (!) of trails. The portion I did, where the Kettle River converges with the St. Croix, was super scenic.

A fun bear story is told.

If you're in northern #Minnesota, Most of the trails are quite runnable and would be great for even the least-experienced of trail runners.

Bifurcating Waterways

Your typical river has a single water basin and drains along a river or two on its way to the sea. But there are a handful of rivers and lakes that don’t obey our usual expectations. Some rivers flow in two directions. Some lakes have multiple outlets, each to a separate water basin. That means that water from a single lake can wind up in two entirely different bodies of water.

The most famous example of these odd waterways is South America’s Casiquiare River, seen running north to south in the image above. This navigable river connects the Orinoco River (flowing east to west in this image) with the Rio Negro (not pictured). Since the Rio Negro eventually joins the Amazon, the Casiquiare River’s meandering, nearly-flat course connects the continent’s two largest basins: the Orinoco and the Amazon.

For more strange waterways across the Americas, check out this review paper, which describes a total of 9 such hydrological head-scratchers. (Image credit: Coordenação-Geral de Observação da Terra/INPE; research credit: R. Sowby and A. Siegel; via Eos)

River Murray freshwater turtles killed by cars and introduced canines

"The species, known as the vacuum cleaners of the river due to the crucial role they play in protecting the ecosystem, has declined by 91 per cent in 40 years, according to scientific research."

"..Turtles had gone through a "long period of persecution", and were listed as a pest species in the past...There's old newspaper clippings where fishers talk about killing 1,000 turtles in [a number of] months." >>
