My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. "A place worth sitting" shows a Dilophosaurus sitting on a beach in the rain (there's a fossil of this happening!).

The yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) found across western Europe and also in a few countries in Eastern Europe. Known for their bright yellow bellies, heart-shaped pupils, and a unique defense mechanism called the "unken reflex" where they turn on their back to expose their bright belly and potentially release a toxic secretion. Some toads will engage in water-wave-producing behavior. This is where a male will kick its hind legs into a small body of water, generating a wave-like pattern. Attracts female & also enables male toad to make its territory. On the arrival of an intruder into one toad's territory, a fight will take place where each male toad trying to climb on the other's back & the loser eventually swimming away.

'Pond life' is sometimes used as an insult applied to particularly contemptible people but I feel that this is unfair to actual pond-dwelling creatures which, by contrast, are mostly harmless and frequently fascinating lifeforms.
Frogspawn is a case in point. You can see that our tiny garden pond is full of the stuff. Zoom in and you can tell that the embryos are starting to elongate towards the shape of a tadpole.
