An organ recipient died from #rabies. The deceased donor wasn't recognized as a rabies case, suffering from non-traditional symptoms. In addition, 3 recipients of corneal tissue were exposed, but were treated with post-exposure prophylaxis.
What a horrible situation.

A school teacher in #California died of #rabies this year, a month after touching a bat she found in her classroom. She didn't know she'd been bitten or scratched.

CDC says “Rabies is a viral disease that is fatal if untreated before symptoms start."

If you feel sick, it's already too late.

In the US, few die from rabies because about 60,000 people are successfully vaccinated each year, post-exposure.

It's not just bats that carry rabies, so leave wildlife alone.

#PSA: if you have any contact with bats--and that includes waking up to find a bat in your room--hie thee to get the rabies vaccine.

However magical you may think them, bats carry the rabies virus, and many bats' bites are too small to see or feel, and may go undetected until it's too late.

Rabies *will* kill you, and horribly. Be safe: get the shot and live.
