Note to GenXers with elderly parents. Do you manage their finances and Social Security account? If so, stay up to date with any forms you might need when they pass away. My dad passed in Feb and they locked his online SSA account within days. Now I have to file his taxes but have no SSA statement and can’t access it. Been on hold for two hours now.

Gene Hackman’s cause of death revealed to be heart disease with his Alzheimer’s listed as a contributing factor. .
His wife (and caregiver) Betsy Arakawa, died of hantavirus a week prior. It’s a rare airborne illness spread through rodent feces.
Hackman was alone in the house for a week with his wife’s dead body.
We may never know exactly what happened in the days leading up to her death, but this is an important reminder that caregivers often need care themselves
Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is more than a full time job, and it’s possible she didn’t get the timely medical care she needed because she was putting his needs before her own
Caregivers deserve to be recognized and supported, and they should always have respite care available
If you know someone providing full time care, reach out to them. Ask them how they’re doing or if you can support them in any way.
Even giving them an hour of rest and recovery can make a world of difference

@SrRochardBunson @bazkie It's one of the real challenges of being a #caregiver and #parent of a #child with #disabilities. #Friends often don't know what to say so they don't say anything at all. Very common, actually.
I was wondering if there are any #AppleWatch gurus who could give me some advice?
The usecase is unusual… I am #caregiver for my wife who has early-onset #Alzheimers. She is in early dementia and is not allowed to drive. She used to run and still enjoys walking around the neighborhood. I have never used AW either so I’m a newbie. (1/5)

Agree that that it’s a good idea for anyone with #alzheimers in the family get tested for APOE. If there’s 1 or 2 copies of allele 4 definitely further testing over the years. Hopefully w/ enough time more will be understood about root cause + better preemptive treatments.
As #caregiver for spouse w/ Alzheimer’s I would say that becoming “selfish and manipulative” is not inevitable. Certainly challenging, lots of chaos, but not necessarily that bad.
Care giver Tips:
When you feel overwhelmed and frustrated and can't leave your home to have a break:
- remind yourself this person is Not trying to be annoying they are likely confused and frustrated
-if your loved one is not in immediate physical danger walk out of the room for a minute until you feel calm
-Do something for yourself even if it's small , for example, make a specialty coffee or tea for yourself
-Meditate-concentrate only on your breathing,;be aware of tension in your body and tighten then relax each tense muscle --repeat
-in your minds eye, remember their expression while laughing and remember how much you love this person.
-play soothing music-it will help you both
-write in a journal IF YOU CAN LOCK IT AWAY where they won't read it.
ABOVE ALL: remember, you are human and have a right to whatever feelings arise what is important is what you DO with those feelings...do Not feel guilty for feeling frustrated, sad, or angry or abandoned by your loved one.
And remember, you are not alone.

My #NeuroSpicy flavour is #80HD, so it may be unsurprising that my academic studies and interests are hella broad. I spend a lot of time digging into local ecology and #HabitatRestoration and preservation. I’m a #space and aeronautics nerd, but I'm also a #Polyglot with an academic background in #linguistics, adult literacy, and ESL. The other part of my academic background is the technical side of theatre.

My uncle and I have had trouble getting healthcare providers to include me in care discussions. He's about to have another inpatient procedure, then rehab, and I can't be there in person at the start. I'm planning on sending the attached letter in with him to give to the hospital & rehab staff. I think I've covered everything, but if this is your jam I'd appreciate any suggestions you have for increasing the odds that it will work. Thank you!
