MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History October 24, 1947: Walt Disney testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, naming many of his own employees as communists, including Herbert Sorrell, David Hilberman and William Pomerance, because of their activism as union organizers. In 1993, the New York Times wrote that Disney had been passing secrets to the FBI from 1940 until his death in 1966. In return, J. Edgar Hoover let Disney film in FBI headquarters in Washington and made Disney a "full Special Agent in Charge Contact."</p><p>In 1971, Ariel Dorfman and Armand Mattelart published “How to Read Donald Duck,” a book-length essay critiquing Disney comics as capitalist propaganda for U.S. corporate and cultural imperialism. It became a bestseller throughout Latin America and is still considered a seminal work in cultural studies. It was first published in Valparaiso, Chile when Allende was in power. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History September 21, 1976: Chilean national Orlando Letelier was assassinated in Washington, D.C. by agents of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA), Pinochet’s secret police. An American, Ronni Moffitt, was also killed. The CIA was aware of the plans and knew of Pinochet’s involvement in the assassinations. Letelier had been a member of the government of Salvador Allende and was living in exile in the U.S. Immediately following the CIA-orchestrated coup that murdered Allende and placed Pinochet in power, Letelier was the first high-ranking Allende cabinet minister to be arrested. He spent over a year in various concentration camps, where he was repeatedly tortured. When he made it to the U.S., he worked for the Institute for Policy Studies. Tiempo :anarchoheart3: ♾️ :heart_bi: 🇵🇸<p>CW: Golpe de estado y violencia política</p><p>Hoy se conmemoran 51 años del golpe de estado en el país que me toca vivir de mano de las fuerzas armadas y de orden, apoyadas por EE.UU. y civiles cómplices. Fue una de las instancias mas horripilantes de nuestra historia y, al día de hoy, aun se sienten los golpes que quedaron. Especialmente se siente en quienes no están y en quienes ni siquiera sabemos donde están. Van 51 años de torturas, asesinatos y desapariciones forzadas, donde.algo de justicia se ha hecho y algo de memoria se sigue trabajando.</p><p>Hoy no olvidamos a quienes no están. Más de 300.000 personas fueron víctimas directas de la dictadura (exilio, tortura, asesinato, desapariciones, sin contar otras formas más de violencia política) y el número de víctimas indirectas es incalculable.</p><p>Hubieron víctimas de todas las edades, desde niñxs hasta ancianos, desde hombres a mujeres embarazadas y las descripciones de lo que se hizo es material de pesadillas</p><p>Porque no olvidamos, hoy conmemoramos. Aunque la democracia quiera hacerse la loca y cerrar una historia. As president, he tried to nationalize major industries, expand education and improve conditions for the working class. On September 11, 1973 (the other 9/11), he was ousted in a coup by Augusto Pinochet, leading to a dictatorship that lasted until 1990. Thousands of workers, socialists, union members and activists were killed, including folk singer Victor Jara, who continued to sing, as his torturers mashed his fingers and demanded that he play his guitar.
