Up in the northern reaches of Katmai National Park, a huge salmon run occurs later in the summer. Bears travel from hundreds of miles away to congregate and gorge themselves on the bounty of flesh that these salmon bring.

We are tasked with doing monitoring during busy weeks in these areas, covering human use, bear use and bear dynamics. We spend a lot of time with binoculars latched to our heads, staring at bears.

But with that you see some intensely interesting behavior from bears. This photo brings a lot of memories for me specifically. We were sitting on the edge of a river while across the river several large males jockeyed for position in the best fishing spots. This smaller male sat on the perimeter, patiently watching and waiting for his time to strike. When a particularly intense squabble happened between the alpha males, this bear quickly snuck in, snatched a salmon, and was all the way across the river into the long grass before the dominant bears could realize what just happened. Even when bears are actively being kicked out by bigger bears, there is so much food abound that no one is going hungry.
Each one of these salmon carry around 4000 calories per fish, and the bears can eat upwards of 90,000 calories a day. Fat is fab in the bear world.

How #Mexico’s #Fishing Refuges Are Fighting Back Against #Poaching - wired.com/story/this-is-how-a- "Following inaction from the government, fishing communities and conservationists are taking it upon themselves to set up and monitor no-catch zones to combat species depletion caused by overfishing."

WIRED · How Mexico’s Fishing Refuges Are Fighting Back Against PoachingBy Geraldine Castro

I'm can't fish as much as I would like as age & trying to maintain health takes up more time.

From that I've learned to try to make the time I do fish richer. Getting strikes is part of the experience but not everything.

So I will pause often to engage senses; feel the wind & sun on my skin, listen to the water lapping on the boat hull, look around & up clouds and sky. Make more memories than just the catch.

And I will give thanks.

I wish that more people would interact with fish through beneficial projects like this, instead of through selfish and torturous practices like fishing.

I feel like we wouldn't see the absurdly poor education on fish that we have today--which leaves many people not even recognising that fish are sentient or capable of feeling pain--if youth were taught and encouraged to engage with aquatic life through non-invasive or altruistic practices.

If the only way youth are taught to interact with fish and other aquatic life is through practices like fishing, then that will probably never change, as fishing relies on normalising a selfish, harmful, and exploitative relationship with fish and wildlife as a whole.

Fish Doorbell: the underwater livestream saving fish in the Netherlands
-----
It's that time of year again – the Fish Doorbell season has begun. For several years now this innovative project in the small Dutch city of Utrecht has been causing a splash. But what exactly is it?

In short, the Fish Doorbell is a system designed to help fish migrate through canals. A camera near Weerdsluis lock streams live footage, allowing the public to spot waiting fish. When enough fish are seen, viewers can press a virtual doorbell, alerting lock operators to open the gate.
