Are folks following organizations here on Mastodon?

I’ve been running the Twitter for the Rainbow Lorikeets, the caucus of the American Ornithological Society.

Seems like a lot of folks that followed that account have moved here, would folks still want a space dedicated to the Lorikeets’ efforts and news? Or are we sticking to personal accounts here?

I’m going to ask the Lorikeets board tomorrow if we should pursue an account for the organization here, but in the meantime if you want some queer ornithology content follow @queerornithology

Tag them in your posts if you are queer-questioning and affiliated with in any way ( even hobbyists welcome), a queer ornithology tag will get your post (toot!) out to the whole group!

@skwinnicki I am queer and just like hearing cool facts about birds! Ok if I follow the group and lurk? :)

@slhuang absolutely!! Follow away for sure!

Other @queerornithology folks may have different opinions, but I very firmly believe that “queer” should encompass anyone who identifies (or questions if they identify) in the LGBTQIA2S+ spectrum! And that “ornithology” should be as broad as possible— publishing bird researchers, sure, but also community scientists, industry scientists, and journalism folks, teachers, students, hobbyists, etc.!

@slhuang Are you queer-identifying or queer-questioning and care about bird research? If so, the @queerornithology community is for you! Follow, and include the handle (@ queerornithology @ a.gup.pe) in your posts! As long as you are respectful of group members it should be fine, and if not, tag me and send them my way (I’m pretty sure I’m the first to make this group? I don’t own it, of course, but I care! And regardless I’ll fight for a diverse group any day!)

@skwinnicki Yay thank you! I will join!

And no worries, I know how the guppe groups work, I got them to catch on for books here and I'm always like "it's fine with me but you realize I can't actually moderate" lol. And I am definitely queer, was feeling imposter about the birds -- I have my bird ID books I take to parks but am much more of a "casual" bird hobbyist than a serious one. But I looooove hearing passionate bird people talk & learning from them (my partner is one! hahaha)

@skwinnicki Thank you again for being so welcoming :) :)

@slhuang It's honestly just sort of selfish, my trying to not exclude folks, ya know? I know that communities work better with more diverse voices, broader perspectives. I want the community to thrive, and meet people's needs, so it's in my best interests to keep it as open as possible. Always!

@slhuang But also I am totally terrified by the inability to moderate the space haha, no way to keep bad actors from hurting community members! Just gotta trust in the good of the anonymous people online, not something I really like betting on! lol

@skwinnicki haha yeah I think we're all sort of feeling that in this new space, aren't we.... personally I like the way you're thinking about it tho!
