I decided to look up mentions of Davisville (what Davis used to be called).

April «.—The Sacramento Valley scored a great triumph when shortly before midnight last night the University Farm Commission voted unanimously to purchase the Davisville Tract offered by the Chamber of Commerce of Davisville, Yolo County, for a State Farm. This action was taken after three hours’ deliberation In executive session, all the members being In attendance. They were Governor Pardee, Lieutenant-Governor Alden Anderson, Benjamin Ide Wheeler, President of the State University* El wood Cooper, State Horticultural Commissioner; Senator B. F. Rush. President of the State Agricultural Society. Yolo County’s victory was notable by reason of the fact that the Davisvillle tract was chosen over seventy different sites In twelve counties which had been offered the State through the Commission. The tract selected embraces 778 acres of rich loam soil adjoining Davisville, and the price to be paid is $104,350."

Due to the research I've done on carob's CA history, I'm a little familiar with the wrangling that happened over where UC campuses would be located. However, it was in regard to another campus.

This is my introduction to what was involved in "The University Farm" selection.

"Alexander Gordon, one of the best I informed men on land values and soil adaptability in California, is convinced that the state made a bad mistake in selecting the Davisville site for the ■tata term. Mr. Gordon saja that the ; error will be more in evidence after j the farm is in full operation. In his ; opinion the practical results expected from the enterprise, and which were in the minds of the promoters of the proposition in the legislature, will fail of realization, as the public will find out before many years. Mr. Gordon thinks that, as far as useful results go, the $135,000 paid for the Davisville site might as well have been turned into a bottomless sewer. “The Davisville tract,” says Mr. Gordon, “is a piece of the richest land in the state. Anything that will grow in California in the richest ground will thrive there. That is the defect in the selection. What the state owes to its citizens who may desire to choose agriculture for their occupation, is not to show them how to grow things on land that will grow everything luxuriantly, but to show them how to get results out of poor soils. "

was a big stink here because the previous government hadn’t renewed funding for the federal library’s digitised newspaper collection Trove. Historians and genealogists lobbied hard and got it reversed. So glad because it’s a goldmine
