Beyond the treetops at Bybee Lake this morning, stream after stream of climbing into the sky and coursing toward the Columbia. Several consecutive flocks of over 100 gigantic white birds; tallying by 10s and 20s, I lost all count at a low estimate of 600 individuals. One flock circled back, gliding directly overhead. Without a single wingbeat - yet the still air struck a penetrating, ventriloquistic HISS across their feathers as they passed.
