It’s a #lostbones #FossilFriday! This remarkable mammoth
has an even more remarkable story! Housed at the Interstate Park Ice Age Interpretive Center in Taylors Falls, WI - the tooth originated in #Minnesota.
It was discovered in 1987 by a heavy equipment operator excavating gravel from a Gray Cloud Island gravel deposit ~125 feet below the original surface!

I spoke with Arnold Sanford at an event held at the Interpretive Center in May of 2023. He indicated that he originally thought the tooth was an agate but after looking closer realized it was mammoth. He also said It was found on a red sand layer below three separate layers of excavation work that had already been done!
The gravel deposit on Gray Cloud Island is still being utilized, however today the deposits are dredged rather than excavated.
